What Came Before Coaching (the roots)?

The Human Potential Movement came out of the social and intellectual environment of the 1960s and was formed to promote the cultivation of extraordinary potential believed to be largely untapped in most people. The movement is premised on the belief that through the development of human potential, humans can experience an exceptional quality of life filled with happiness, creativity, and fulfillment.

Also.... (here comes coaching!)

"A corollary belief is often that those who begin to unleash this potential will find their actions within society to be directed towards helping others release their potential. The belief is that the net effect of individuals cultivating their potential will bring about positive social change at large."

So coaching is really a form of personal development first, then passing it on to others.

Does this mean that every coach should first successfully develop self?

Or does this imply that coaching others IS the process of developing self?

Here is another great resource on this:

Would love to see you post your thoughts here.....

Thank you for so elogantly stating what has long been an integral part of my business & personal mission statements.
I believe that to achieve a successful outcome helping others has to be an integral part of any endeavor. From parenting & marriage, to major business.
The focus of my business, Simple Comforts, has been to help others find success in their own Country Business.
I appreciate the time you have taken to share yourself so openly in this blog. You've even inspired me to go do some housework!

Thanks, Risea@yahoo.com

I think the point is that an effective coach is one who's passionate and excited about developing self. That includes own self and that of others. Developing one's own self is very often where that starts - it's what initially inspired me to become a coach, and the same's true for quite a few other coaches I know.

Should every coach successfully develop Self first? Leaving aside the question of where the benchmark is and who decides that, I've two thoughts. Firstly, I spend quite a bit of coaching time getting people to set aside 'should'!

Secondly, there's my new speciality, coaching for fathers. I fixed on this niche because I'm a man, a dad, and a son. This means I've got a certain bond with other dads. But the thing that really makes me into a powerful coach for fathers is that I feel this is an area of my Self which I feel an urge to develop. The fact that I feel that area is under-developed in me is exactly what gives real energy to my coaching other dads!
